Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), has recently targeted a modder’s YouTube channel with a copyright strike, adding to its history of aggressive actions. The modder in question, Bloc, had created a new GTA V mod that introduced a unique storyline and allowed for unscripted conversations with non-player characters (NPCs) using Inworld AI’s Character Engine.
However, Take-Two took down the mod and issued a copyright strike on Bloc’s YouTube channel without any prior communication. This sudden action left Bloc disheartened and frustrated. He expressed his disappointment with Take-Two’s hostile attitude considering his lifelong passion for the Grand Theft Auto series.
Bloc mentioned that his account on Netlify, a hosting platform for his mod’s installation guide, was also suspended without warning. While he acknowledged that the three-month demonetization of his YouTube videos may not have a significant impact on his life, it still discourages him from creating more content and mods. Bloc also noted that Take-Two’s actions hinder his ability to communicate with the community and resolve any potential violations.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Take-Two has aggressively targeted modders and community projects. Luke Ross, another modder, faced a takedown notice last year for his mods related to Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, and Mafia VR, which led to their complete removal. Take-Two even filed a lawsuit against a team that reverse-engineered Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City.
It is worth mentioning that there are still various GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Mafia mods available, but Take-Two holds the power to take them down at any given time. Many hope that Bloc will continue his modding efforts with companies that have friendlier mod policies.
These recent actions by Take-Two raise concerns about their approach to modding and community creativity. The company’s aggressive stance not only affects individual modders but also impacts the broader gaming community. It remains to be seen how Take-Two will handle such situations moving forward, as modding has long been an integral part of the gaming culture, allowing players to enhance their gaming experience and extend the lifespan of these beloved games.
