Syphilis patients are rapidly increasing nationwide, doctors are on alert

He stated, We don’t expect infections to plummet any time soon. Dr. Ho also highlighted the rise in congenital syphilis cases nationwide, which are predicted to be 10 times higher in 2022 compared to a decade ago. Congenital syphilis can have severe consequences for the health of babies, potentially leading to stillbirth and birth defects.
One possible factor contributing to the increase in syphilis infections is problems with access to medical care and delays in testing. To address this issue, Dr. Ho suggested expanding the availability of point-of-care tests, allowing individuals to receive immediate results. We’re making sure pregnant women get tested, we’re making sure sexually active people get tested regularly, too.
