Syphilis patients are rapidly increasing nationwide, doctors are on alert

Doctors across the United States have noticed a concerning trend in syphilis cases in recent years. According to the latest sexually transmitted disease surveillance report from the CDC, syphilis infections have been rapidly increasing nationwide, with an alarming rate change of nearly 79 percent from 2018 to 2022. Allegheny County in Pennsylvania has also experienced a similar surge in syphilis cases during this period, as reported by the Allegheny County Health Department.

Dr. Ken Ho, an infectious disease expert at UPMC and associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, expressed his concerns about this growing public health issue. He stated, We don’t expect infections to plummet any time soon. Dr. Ho also highlighted the rise in congenital syphilis cases nationwide, which are predicted to be 10 times higher in 2022 compared to a decade ago. Congenital syphilis can have severe consequences for the health of babies, potentially leading to stillbirth and birth defects.

One possible factor contributing to the increase in syphilis infections is problems with access to medical care and delays in testing. To address this issue, Dr. Ho suggested expanding the availability of point-of-care tests, allowing individuals to receive immediate results. Early detection and treatment are crucial in preventing the spread of syphilis and minimizing its impact on individuals’ health.

Syphilis disproportionately affects the black residents of Allegheny County and men who have sex with men, according to the county health department. To combat the rising rates of syphilis, Dr. Ho emphasized the importance of raising awareness among healthcare providers. He stated, We’re talking about this more now, which is great. We’re making sure pregnant women get tested, we’re making sure sexually active people get tested regularly, too.

Individuals are urged to take proactive measures to protect themselves against syphilis. Dr. Ho advised, Cooperate with your medical care. If you are sexually active, discuss how you can protect yourself from syphilis and whether you should get tested regularly. The answer is probably yes.

The Allegheny County Health Department is committed to addressing syphilis cases in the area. Disease intervention specialists investigate all confirmed cases and reach out to individuals and their potential partners to ensure they receive appropriate treatment or follow-up testing.

It is crucial to remember that untreated sexually transmitted infections can lead to serious health problems. Regular testing, early intervention, and safe sexual practices are vital in preventing the spread of syphilis and protecting individuals’ well-being.

As the number of syphilis cases continues to rise, doctors and public health officials are working diligently to address this growing public health concern. By raising awareness, improving access to testing, and promoting safe habits, it is hoped that the upward trend in syphilis infections can be reversed, ensuring the health and well-being of communities nationwide.
