Ludhiana: Swine Flu Case Surge: ‘no Cause For Alarm’

Amid the prolonged cold conditions, Ludhiana has witnessed an increase in swine flu cases, with the number of cases reported in January so far accounting for 85% of the total number of cases witnessed last year. However, health department authorities have emphasized that the majority of these cases are mild and moderate, therefore, they do not indicate a cause for alarm.

According to the health department data on swine flu, the district reported 28 cases until January 26. Comparatively, in 2023, the number of swine flu cases in the district was 33, with the highest number of cases recorded in 2022 at 63.

Civil surgeon Dr. Jasbir Singh Aulakh explained that most of the cases fall under the mild (A) and moderate (B) categories, for which tests are not necessary as per norms. However, private hospitals have been requested to conduct testing for the severe (C) type of cases.

Despite the rise in swine flu cases, the civil surgeon emphasized that it should not be considered a warning. He advised patients with severe symptoms to promptly seek medical attention, while those with mild and moderate symptoms should self-isolate, avoid crowded places, undergo symptomatic treatment, and maintain a healthy diet. Health department officials also assured that A and B category swine flu is self-limiting, hence patients need not panic. Additionally, the contacts of swine flu patients are provided with prophylactic treatment for a duration of 10 days.

Dr. Amanpreet Kaur from the department of medicine at the civil hospital speculated that the surge in cases this year could be attributed to the prolonged severe cold conditions.

Dr. Sunil Katyal, the president of Punjab IMA, noted that viral infections such as swine flu tend to increase during seasonal changes. He advised people, especially those with comorbidities, to get vaccinated before the winter season to prevent the infection.

In conclusion, Ludhiana has experienced a surge in swine flu cases, but health authorities stress that there is no cause for alarm, as the majority of cases are mild and moderate. Patients are advised to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen and to follow self-isolation measures. The increase in cases is believed to be influenced by the prolonged severe cold conditions. It is recommended that individuals, particularly those with underlying health conditions, get vaccinated as a preventive measure against swine flu.
