Surrey County Council (SCC) has announced plans to repair potholes and resurface roads in the region using reallocated HS2 funding. This initiative will benefit at least 11 routes, including areas in Guildford, Leatherhead, and Redhill.

Surrey is set to receive a portion of the £735 million designated for road resurfacing across the Southeast, spanning an 11-year period. This funding stems from the Government’s commitment of £8.3 billion to address road maintenance issues in England.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper emphasized the importance of empowering local authorities with resources to address road infrastructure challenges. With around £23 million already distributed to councils in the Southeast, an additional £23 million is expected to follow in the upcoming financial year.

SCC highlighted the significant impact of the additional funding on various roads like the A24 in Dorking, the A25 in Godstone, and the A23 in South Earlswood. Moreover, future schemes are in place for roads such as the A320 in Guildford, the A242 in Redhill, and the B2128 in Cranleigh.

To make the most of the funding, councils are mandated to incorporate innovative technologies and equipment to effectively address potholes and road maintenance issues. They are encouraged to tackle underlying soil problems, enhancing the longevity and quality of road resurfacing efforts.

Residents can expect to witness significant improvements in road conditions as councils work diligently to fulfill their plans for road maintenance and pothole repairs. The prioritization of these infrastructure projects underscores the Government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of local roads for the benefit of drivers and communities.
