The Surge of Viral Myositis and Cardiac Inflammation Hits Mumbai Hospitals
In recent weeks, clinics and outpatient departments across state-run hospitals in Mumbai have been witnessing a surge in cases of viral myositis. Myositis is the inflammation of voluntary muscles, characterized by pain, tenderness, swelling, acute weakness, and high fever. Reports suggest that over the past two weeks, doctors have encountered more than 20-25 cases, with a fraction of them requiring hospitalization.
Dr. Sandeep Yadav, a consultant rheumatologist at PD Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, acknowledges the evident increase in myositis cases. He draws a parallel with the COVID-19 situation, where individuals recovering from viral fever may experience symptoms such as muscle weakness and inflammation, which are typically associated with myositis. While a mild amount of muscle weakness can be attributed to viral fever, the acute stage is related to myositis.
During viral fever, the body mounts an inflammatory response to combat the virus. In most cases, the fever subsides within a week or so. However, in some instances, this inflammation, originally triggered by the viral fever, becomes dysregulated and disrupts the body’s natural immune system. Consequently, the proximal muscles of the body, particularly those in the thighs, shoulders, arms, and back, become inflamed. This condition is known as post-viral myositis, occurring after the viral fever has resolved. Dr. Yadav explains that certain individuals may be genetically prone to experiencing muscle inflammation as a result of post-viral myositis. In most cases, treatment with paracetamol is sufficient, while only acute cases require hospitalization.
Dr. Paritosh Baghel, a senior consultant for internal medicine at SL Raheja Hospital in Mumbai’s Mahim, also reports an alarming increase in viral pericarditis and myocarditis cases. These conditions involve inflammation of the cardiac muscles following a bout of viral fever. Patients with these conditions often present with fever, palpitations, dizziness, and discomfort in the chest. Elevated heart rate readings on an electrocardiogram (ECG) lead medical professionals to suspect myocarditis. Symptomatic treatment is typically effective, resolving the issue. However, in cases of severe pain, hospital admission may be necessary, as severe myositis can potentially lead to renal failure.
The rise in cases of viral myositis and cardiac inflammation in Mumbai’s hospitals warrants attention and vigilance from medical professionals. Both Dr. Yadav and Dr. Baghel emphasize the need for prompt and accurate diagnosis to ensure timely intervention. Effective treatment plans can help alleviate symptoms and minimize the risk of complications associated with these conditions.
