Lucknow, Nov 28 – The deteriorating air quality in Lucknow has resulted in a significant increase in patients suffering from respiratory and eye-related problems. Medical experts have confirmed that the rise in pollution levels is directly impacting the health of the city’s residents.
Prof Darshan Bajaj from the pulmonary medicine department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) stated, We have observed a 25% rise in the frequency of upper respiratory infections across all age groups compared to the 50 cases recorded daily in October. He attributed this surge to the elevated levels of PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter in the air, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and trigger inflammation, potentially leading to chronic respiratory issues.
Ajay Tripathi, the medical superintendent at Lokbandhu Hospital, noted a significant increase in the number of patients with respiratory infections, rising from 40 to 70 per day. Additionally, throat infections have witnessed a surge, reaching 10 to 20 daily, alongside approximately 20 cases of eye infections.
Similarly, Balrampur Hospital reported a daily increase in respiratory infection cases from 100 to 150, as stated by Atul Mehrotra, the chief medical superintendent (CMS). The impact of pollution on eye health was also noted by Prof Siddharth Agrawal from KGMU’s ophthalmology department, who expressed concern over the rise in conjunctivitis cases due to pollution. Till October, the number was barely two to three, now it is 10, he said, advising residents to protect their eyes with goggles and prioritize regular washing.
ENT surgeon Rakesh Srivastava added that pollutants, including particulate matter and irritant gases, have been associated with increased coughing and wheezing. He emphasized the importance of minimizing exposure to air pollution either by staying indoors or wearing masks.
The spike in patients suffering from respiratory and eye-related problems in Lucknow highlights the urgent need for measures to improve air quality. Government agencies and citizens must come together to address this issue and implement long-term solutions to protect public health.
As the number of patients continues to rise, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize their well-being by taking necessary precautions and seeking medical attention if they experience any symptoms related to respiratory or eye infections. Additionally, efforts should be made at every level to combat air pollution and safeguard the health of the population.
In conclusion, the alarming increase in patients due to deteriorating air quality in Lucknow serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for cleaner air. It is imperative that steps be taken immediately to mitigate pollution levels and prioritize the well-being of the city’s residents.
