Residents of Lagos, Nigeria, are expressing concerns over a surge in armed robbery cases on the streets and roads of the city. Reports from PUNCH Metro reveal that residents have been experiencing frequent raids and robberies in various areas, including Surulere, Abule Egba, and Akowonjo-Egbeda.
In Surulere, armed robbers stole cash and properties from Lawani Street on the night of July 18. According to one resident, Biodun, the area has been targeted by robbers for several consecutive weeks. Another resident, Juwon, recounted how he was robbed of his phone and had his bank account emptied by hoodlums wielding knives in the Abule Egba area. Similar incidents have occurred in the Akowonjo-Egbeda area, where armed robbers invaded houses in the early hours of July 13, shooting indiscriminately and robbing residents.
These incidents highlight the growing concern among Lagos residents regarding the rise in armed robberies. The situation is further compounded by reports of public bus operators allegedly colluding with robbers, putting commuters at risk as well. Many residents have expressed their fear that the current state of the economy may worsen the situation.
Responding to the reports, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, urged residents to report robbery incidents to the police. He emphasized the importance of gathering statistics to better understand the areas and times at which these crimes occur, enabling the police to improve their anti-crime strategy.
As the issue continues to escalate, residents are taking their safety into their own hands, with some individuals considering purchasing pepper spray and pocket knives for self-defense. The concerns raised by residents point to a need for immediate action to address the surge in armed robbery cases and ensure the safety and security of Lagos residents.
It is important for authorities to adopt effective measures to combat this growing problem, including increased police presence, neighborhood watch programs, and community engagement initiatives. By working together, residents and law enforcement can create a safer environment for all, reducing the incidents of armed robberies on Lagos streets and restoring peace of mind to the community.
