The city of Surat in Gujarat smashed the previous Guinness World Record for the largest yoga session gathering with over 100,000 participants on International Yoga Day, according to Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi. The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who said over 1.25 crore people joined in the celebrations at 72,000 venues across the state. Patel also announced the government’s plan of opening 21 ‘Yog Studios’ to boost yoga popularity. This year, as India celebrates 75 years of independence, 75 iconic places across the state were selected to conduct Yoga Day activities, including the Sabarmati Riverfront (Ahmedabad), Statue of Unity (Kevadia), White Rann of Kutch and Modhera Sun Temple. Other officials, including MLAs and MPs, took part in programmes in different districts. In his address, Patel acknowledged the role of yoga and pranayama in helping people during the pandemic, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had popularised yoga around the world.
