Mary Wilson, co-founder of the legendary group The Supremes, has sadly passed away at her home in Henderson, Nevada. The news of her sudden death shocked fans and music lovers around the world. Wilson’s longtime publicist, Jay Schwartz, confirmed her passing but did not reveal the cause of death at the time.

Mary Wilson was an integral part of The Supremes, a groundbreaking group that not only achieved an incredible string of hits, but also played a significant role in breaking the color barrier in the music industry. In the 1960s, The Supremes exploded onto the music scene with chart-topping songs like Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, and Stop! In the Name of Love. Their success continued with numerous other hits such as You Can’t Hurry Love, Reflections, and Love Child.

The Supremes became Motown’s most successful act of the era, with an impressive 12 singles reaching the number one spot on the charts. They still hold the title as the number one female recording group of all time.

Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Florence Ballard grew up together in Detroit’s Brewster Project and formed The Supremes while still in high school. They sought out Berry Gordy of Motown Records for a chance at stardom. Gordy advised them to finish their education before pursuing their dreams, and they did exactly that. The group initially started as The Primettes before changing their name to The Supremes.

Berry Gordy recognized the potential of The Supremes and made strategic decisions to break them into venues that had not traditionally catered to a diverse audience. The group’s performances at venues like New York’s Copacabana were instrumental in promoting civil rights during the 1960s. They graced the stages of popular TV shows such as American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show and even had their own TV specials.

Over time, changes occurred within the group, and eventually, Diana Ross departed in 1970. She was replaced by Jean Terrell, and much to the surprise of many in the music industry, The Supremes continued to flourish. They delivered hits like Up the Ladder to the Roof, Stoned Love, Nathan Jones, and Floy Joy.

Despite various lineup changes, The Supremes disbanded in 1977, although there were sporadic talks of reunions. Diana Ross, however, never showed interest in reuniting with the group. In light of Mary Wilson’s passing, Ross expressed her condolences on Twitter, saying she had many cherished memories of their time together and that The Supremes would live on in their hearts.

Following the disbandment, Mary Wilson pursued a solo career and excelled as an author and motivational speaker. Just two days before her untimely death, she shared a video on YouTube expressing her excitement for Black History Month, The Supremes’ 60th anniversary, and the upcoming release of her own recordings.

Mary Wilson’s impact on Motown and the music industry as a whole cannot be overstated. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of fans and fellow musicians. Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, paid tribute to Wilson by highlighting her trailblazing spirit, diva-like persona, and significant contributions to The Supremes’ legacy.

Mary Wilson will be remembered as one of the sweethearts of Motown and a true icon in her own right. Her talent, charisma, and passion for music will continue to inspire generations to come.
