The Supreme Court of India has refused to interfere with the decision of Calcutta High Court regarding the deployment of central forces for the upcoming panchayat elections in West Bengal. The petition challenging the decision was dismissed by a vacation bench comprising Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Manoj Misra. During the hearing, the court remarked that holding elections cannot be a license for violence. The court further observed that what the HC may have thought is that instead of requisitioning forces from other states, it is better to deploy central forces. Senior advocates, Meenakshi Arora and Harish Salve, appearing for the WB State Election Commission and one of the respondents respectively, informed the SC about the ground situation in the state. Panchayat polls in West Bengal will witness a fierce contest between the BJP and ruling Trinamool Congress. The election will be held in a single phase on July 8, with vote counting scheduled for July 11.
