The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of Umar Khalid’s bail plea in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A) case related to the Delhi riots in February 2020. The former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student’s bail plea will now be heard on January 24. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Khalid, requested the adjournment, citing his engagement in a Constitution bench hearing. The bench initially hesitated but eventually deferred the matter, stating that no further adjournments would be granted. Khalid had approached the top court challenging a Delhi High Court verdict that denied him bail. Khalid has been charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, and unlawful assembly, among other sections of the UAPA. The violence during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens had resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.
