Support for Sinn Fein in the Republic of Ireland falls

Support for Sinn Fein, the political party led by Mary Lou McDonald, is on the decline in the Republic of Ireland, according to the latest polling data. The recent Business Post/Red C poll reveals that Sinn Fein’s support has dropped from 29% in November to 25%. Although they remain the most popular party in the south, this decrease marks their lowest level of support in four years, down from 32% last October.

The poll also highlights that Sinn Fein holds the strongest support among working-class voters, with 36% backing the party. Additionally, it shows that the party enjoys slightly more popularity with women (27%) compared to men (24%).

In the political landscape, Sinn Fein is currently five points ahead of Fine Gael, who maintain a steady 20% support. Fianna Fail, on the other hand, has experienced a one-point increase, reaching 17%. Among the smaller parties, independent TDs have seen the largest increase, rising by two points to 15%. Meanwhile, support for the Social Democrats remains stable at 6%, and both the Greens and Labour maintain their standing at 4%. People Before Profit remains at 3%, while Aontu has gained one point, reaching 3%.

Conducted online between January 19 and January 24, the poll surveyed 1,003 individuals from across the Republic of Ireland.

Sinn Fein has recently faced scrutiny over their stance on immigration, particularly in light of anti-immigrant protests in the country. While traditionally considered a left-wing party, there has been speculation that Sinn Fein may lose support if they do not adopt a tougher stance on immigration. A poll conducted last year found that 80% of Sinn Fein supporters believe the Republic is accepting too many refugees.

In response to the criticism, Mary Lou McDonald stated in an interview with The Journal, I think there has to be space for people to ask questions because I think if we’re not in that space, if we’re saying ‘you shall not speak on this subject’. I mean, what’s that achieving? I don’t think it’s helpful to repress the conversation around immigration.

As Sinn Fein grapples with these concerns, the party must navigate the delicate balance between retaining its traditional support while addressing the evolving concerns of its constituents.
