England’s bowling approach and field placements during their first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston have come under criticism from former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. Despite their ultra-attacking approach in the opening Test, England struggled to get through a solid Australian batting unit. Gavaskar pointed out that England’s ‘Bazball’ approach is solely related to batting and comes to a halt when it comes to bowling. In a column for Mid-Day, he criticised England’s field placements as being for TV rather than designed to take wickets, suggesting that three men in catching positions on both sides of the wicket isn’t innovative or even helpful. Additionally, Gavaskar questioned the positioning of the fielders, suggesting that they should be five to ten paces back, which would allow more time to react when taking catches and could reduce the number of missed opportunities.
