Sudden Spike in Flu-like Cases Raises Concerns of New COVID Variant in Odisha
Amidst growing concerns over the new Covid variant EG.5.1, also known as Eris, which has become the second-most common infection in the UK, the state of Odisha in India has witnessed a sudden increase in viral and flu cases with symptoms similar to Covid-19. This surge has sparked fear among patients as Covid testing has significantly declined following a drastic decline in cases.
While the primary symptoms associated with the new variant include a sore throat, blocked nose, dry cough, headache, and body ache, individuals with viral fever and seasonal flu, who are seeking treatment at various hospitals in Odisha, are also complaining of similar symptoms. Furthermore, some patients, even those who are otherwise healthy, have reported feeling unwell for up to two weeks without experiencing fever or any other typical Covid symptoms. This has led to concerns as several patients are resorting to self-medication instead of seeking medical attention.
Health experts have advised people to remain vigilant and consult doctors if they experience breathlessness and congestion in the chest, especially in light of a few cases of the Eris variant being reported in Maharashtra. Dr. Niroj Mishra, a senior internal medicine specialist, mentioned that despite the spike in viral and influenza cases, Odisha has not yet reported any cases of the new variant. However, he emphasized the importance of staying alert as the Eris variant has the potential to spread faster than previous strains due to a growth advantage of 15 to 20 percent.
Dr. Bijay Mohapatra, the Director of Health Services, stated that the state government is closely monitoring the infection rate and any potential spike in Covid cases across other states. As the new variant has not been thoroughly studied yet, the government has yet to make a decision regarding its classification. Dr. Mohapatra urged individuals with flu-like symptoms to follow regular hygiene practices, self-isolate if necessary, and wear masks in public places to prevent the spread of any potential infections.
In the last 24 hours, Odisha reported two new Covid cases out of 701 samples tested. With the recovery of two patients, the number of active cases currently stands at 14.
As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize their health and seek professional medical advice rather than resorting to self-medication. By staying informed, following recommended guidelines, and promptly reporting any Covid-like symptoms, we can collectively work towards controlling the spread of the virus and protecting ourselves and our communities.
