Paper and bamboo straws, often marketed as eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, have been found to contain harmful forever chemicals, according to a study conducted by Belgian researchers. These so-called green utensils, which are touted as more sustainable options, were found to be worse for both human health and the planet compared to their plastic counterparts. Poly- and perfluoroalkyl-based substances, known as PFAS or forever chemicals due to their long-lasting properties, were detected in a majority of the paper and bamboo straws analyzed. This raises concerns about their biodegradability and potential for leaching into beverages. It is worth noting that PFAS have been banned globally since 2020. Surprisingly, stainless steel straws were found to be free of PFAS, making them a safer alternative. The study’s findings highlight the need for consumers to be aware of the potential risks associated with green utensils and consider using stainless steel straws or abstaining from using straws altogether.
