Study Reveals Possible Link Between Childhood Health Issues and Natural Gas Wells

A recent study conducted in Western Pennsylvania suggests a potential connection between childhood health problems and the presence of natural gas wells. The research, which is nearing completion, has shed light on a concerning association between living in close proximity to these wells and the development of rare lymphoma among children. Furthermore, residents of all ages residing near these wells have an increased risk of experiencing severe asthma reactions.

The comprehensive study, funded by taxpayers with a budget of $2.5 million over four years, was carried out by the University of Pittsburgh. Its inquiry was prompted by the efforts of families with pediatric cancer patients, and the results were unveiled during a public meeting at Pennsylvania Western University on August 15.

The researchers discovered that children who resided within a mile of a natural gas well faced a five to seven times higher risk of developing lymphoma compared to those living five or more miles away. Specifically, children living near the wells had an estimated 60 to 84 cases of lymphoma per million, compared to only 12 cases per million for those residing farther from the wells.

It is important to note that while a correlation was found between severe asthma and gas extraction, no such linkage was established during other stages of well operation such as construction, drilling, or fracking. This observation highlights the need for further investigation to establish a clearer understanding of the potential impact of these activities on respiratory health.

The study also explored the effects of gas production on preterm births and birth weights among families living in close proximity to the wells. The findings in this area were more nuanced, with mixed results similar to those of previous studies. The researchers did uncover the possibility that gas production may lead to slightly reduced birth weights, but the average reduction was less than an ounce.

Despite the troubling associations identified between natural gas wells and childhood health issues, it is important to highlight that the study’s data did not establish a direct causal relationship. The researchers noted that they only found an association and could not definitively state that the drilling activities were the sole cause of lymphoma and asthma in children.

Interestingly, the study did not establish a link between gas drilling and two other forms of cancer, namely brain and bone cancers. This observation underscores the need for continued research and investigation into the potential health effects of natural gas extraction.

The recognition of these potential links between childhood health problems and natural gas wells serves as a call to action for further monitoring and regulation. As more communities rely on natural gas as an energy source, it is crucial to prioritize the protection of public health. By conducting rigorous studies and implementing measures that mitigate potential risks, we can ensure the well-being of our children and communities.

In conclusion, the research conducted by the University of Pittsburgh suggests a possible association between childhood health problems such as lymphoma and living near natural gas wells. The study findings underscore the need for further investigation and proactive measures to safeguard the health of communities residing near gas extraction sites.
