The KMC health department has written to the police, requesting increased vigilance near the Dhapa dog pound and other shelter houses where stray dogs are being treated during the upcoming festive season of Kali Puja and Diwali. Their objective is to minimize the stress levels in these dogs, which are exacerbated by the continuous bursting of high-decibel crackers.
The Dhapa dog pound, which is managed by the KMC, provides shelter for around 200 stray dogs. These dogs are brought in for sterilization, vaccination, and critical-care treatment. However, the loud noise from crackers poses a significant threat to their well-being.
ENT specialist Dulal Bose emphasized the vulnerability of stray dogs and cats to the sound of crackers, which affects them more than humans. Animal activist Rana Ganguli noted the chain effect of bursting high-decibel crackers, leading to a surge in sick dogs at pet clinics across the city after every Diwali.
