Kolkata Officials Seek Protection for Stray Dogs During Diwali Crackers

In an effort to protect stray dogs from the harmful effects of Diwali crackers, officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) dog squad have reached out to the police for assistance. Their concern stems from a tragic incident where a four-year-old stray dog, undergoing treatment at the Dhapa dog pound, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away due to the loud noise caused by crackers during a wedding procession.

The KMC health department has written to the police, requesting increased vigilance near the Dhapa dog pound and other shelter houses where stray dogs are being treated during the upcoming festive season of Kali Puja and Diwali. Their objective is to minimize the stress levels in these dogs, which are exacerbated by the continuous bursting of high-decibel crackers.

The Dhapa dog pound, which is managed by the KMC, provides shelter for around 200 stray dogs. These dogs are brought in for sterilization, vaccination, and critical-care treatment. However, the loud noise from crackers poses a significant threat to their well-being.

ENT specialist Dulal Bose emphasized the vulnerability of stray dogs and cats to the sound of crackers, which affects them more than humans. He expressed concern about the decision to raise the decibel limit of crackers this year, stating that everyone should be more mindful of the well-being of these strays, particularly during the upcoming festive season.

Animal activist Rana Ganguli noted the chain effect of bursting high-decibel crackers, leading to a surge in sick dogs at pet clinics across the city after every Diwali. Both pets at home and stray dogs face increased stress due to the sound of crackers. Stray dogs, in particular, are directly exposed to the menace at night, resulting in critical injuries for some.

To ensure the safety of stray dogs during Diwali, KMC officials stated that their dog squad would coordinate with local police stations in areas known for the use of banned crackers. Measures will be taken to protect these vulnerable animals.

The initiative taken by Kolkata officials highlights the need for increased sensitivity towards the well-being of stray dogs during the festive season. By reducing the stress caused by noise pollution, authorities aim to safeguard the health and lives of these animals.

In conclusion, Kolkata Municipal Corporation dog squad officials are seeking protection for stray dogs during Diwali crackers. They have reached out to the police, urging vigilance near shelter houses and the Dhapa dog pound. This move comes after a stray dog tragically passed away due to the loud noise of crackers during a wedding procession. The well-being of these vulnerable animals is a significant concern, requiring the support and cooperation of the community to ensure their safety during the festive season.
