A woman and her son have been banished from their community in Nigeria after they were found guilty of burying her 11-year-old stepson alive. The shocking incident occurred in the town of Apamsede-Lokoja in Kogi State and was reportedly motivated by an alleged theft of N1,000 ($2.40) by the young boy.

Malam Garba Ahmed, the District Head of Apamsede-Lokoja, confirmed the decision to banish the stepmother and her son from the community. He revealed that the boy’s father, stepmother, and stepson were initially summoned to the palace to address the incident. However, the father fled when the council suggested involving the police.

During the hearing, the stepmother and her son, named Goodness, confessed to their crime. The traditional council of Apamsede-Lokoja decided that such heinous acts could not be tolerated in their community. Once the legal proceedings are complete, the stepmother and son will be banished from the land.

Malam Garba Ahmed also stated that, prior to their departure, they would be required to perform certain rites aimed at cleansing the community they defiled. It is clear that the community leaders are resolute in upholding justice and maintaining the integrity of their land.

The incident has sparked outrage and disbelief among the residents of Apamsede-Lokoja. The banishment serves as a strong message that acts of violence and cruelty will not be tolerated in their community.

The fate of the young victim, Friday Oshodi, remains uncertain. It is essential that child protection agencies and authorities provide him with the necessary support and care to overcome this traumatic experience. The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and protection for vulnerable children, as well as efforts to educate communities on child rights and welfare.

As the community in Apamsede-Lokoja looks towards healing and rebuilding, it is hoped that this tragic event will serve as a wake-up call for all to prioritize the safety and well-being of children. Through collective efforts and a commitment to justice, it is possible to create a future where such horrific incidents are prevented and children can live in peace and security.
