Steelers Face Loss of Key Defensive Player in Proposed Trade

Getty Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson has proposed a potential trade for the Pittsburgh Steelers that would see starting defensive back Levi Wallace move to the Detroit Lions. Robinson believes that the Steelers’ latest additions, including veteran Patrick Peterson and Cory Trice, could make Wallace expendable. With Wallace scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, Robinson believes that trading him for a Day 3 draft pick is the smartest move for the team. However, trading Wallace could be a mistake, as he still plays like a starter when given the opportunity. In two games last season where Wallace played more than 50 defensive snaps, he played aggressively with 13 pass defenses and 4 interceptions, both of which were career highs. Furthermore, just because Peterson and Trice have arrived doesn’t mean Wallace won’t have a starting role again. Peterson revealed on his podcast on June 19 that he is learning a new position, perhaps even more than one, this offseason. The Steelers view themselves as a contender, making it unlikely that they will give up Wallace’s experience in the secondary, even if it means losing him to free agency.
