Maharashtra’s Latur city recently celebrated the 149th birth anniversary of social reformer king Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj by unveiling a nine-feet tall bronze statue in his honor. The statue was erected at Shahu Chowk by the Latur Municipal Corporation. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Latur MP Sudhakar Shrangare, MLC Vikram Kale, MLA Dhiraj Deshmukh, and former MP Dr Sunil Gaikwad.
The corporation’s standing committee had proposed the installation of the statue in 2015 and received the collector’s approval last year. Shrangare spoke during the ceremony about Shahu Maharaj’s work for the welfare and upliftment of society and credited him with pioneering social reforms such as widow remarriage.
Shahu Maharaj was a revered figure who championed the cause of the marginalized and disadvantaged throughout his lifetime, and Maharashtra continues to honor his legacy. His philosophy of social justice and equality continue to inspire people across the country.
The statue’s unveiling is seen as a fitting tribute to Shahu Maharaj and his contributions to society, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of his work in addressing social ills and advocating for a more equitable society. The Latur Municipal Corporation’s decision to erect the statue is a testament to the role that Shahu Maharaj continues to play in the lives of people in Maharashtra and India.
