The State Election Commission (SEC) in West Bengal has ordered the videography of the procedure during the nomination filing for next month’s panchayat polls in order to check the violence that often occurs. The elections will be held on July 8, with the counting of votes on July 11. The SEC has issued the order to ensure a free and fair nomination filing. On June 13, an all-party meeting will be held to discuss the panchayat elections in West Bengal. Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government is creating an atmosphere of fear in the run-up to the panchayat polls. Speaking about the assassination of a party worker, Fulchand Shaikh, Chowdhury alleged that jungle rule prevails in the state. The contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress is expected to be a fierce one, as it will be considered a litmus test ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
