State Controller Malia Cohen recently delivered a powerful keynote address at the Women’s Equality Day Luncheon, held at LinkedIn’s headquarters in Mountain View. The event celebrated women’s empowerment and also commemorated the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote, as well as the 50th anniversary of Santa Clara County’s Commission on the Status of Women.

During her speech, Cohen highlighted the accomplishments of women in various fields. She mentioned the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, which grossed $1.4 billion, and the thriving concert tours of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. Cohen also commended former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley for her performance in a recent Republican primary debate, showcasing her bipartisan approach.

Cohen emphasized the progress that women have made over the past 50 years and the importance of recognizing and respecting the women who are paving the way for further advancements.

The Women’s Equality Day Luncheon, emceed by Susan Ellenberg, attracted around 200 predominantly female attendees. Notable guests included elected officials from across the county, San Jose State President Cynthia Teniente-Matson, and various leaders in education and labor organizations.

At the event, Danielle Slaton received the Woman of Impact award for her exceptional contributions. Slaton, a San Jose native and soccer player, represented the U.S. women’s national team in the 2000 Olympics and the 2003 World Cup. She currently serves as the board chair for the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) and is a co-founder of Bay FC, a National Women’s Soccer League team.

Slaton expressed her humility upon receiving the award and stressed the importance of collective efforts to address future challenges.

In other news, Mineta San Jose International Airport and San Jose’s Office of Cultural Affairs have organized a special tie-in to Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour concerts at Levi’s Stadium. Fans, known as the BeyHive, are encouraged to visit the airport and take professional photos in front of the illuminated metal sculpture titled XO, which references one of Beyoncé’s songs. Photographer Dave Lepori will be present to capture the fans’ excitement.

Additionally, the Berryessa Flea Market Vendors Association has partnered with San Jose City Councilmembers to provide visibility to vendors facing relocation due to the future redevelopment of the San Jose Flea Market. Instead of protesting, the vendors will showcase their goods at Plaza Azul, a weekly farmers and arts market held on City Hall plaza as part of the Blue Zone healthy communities initiative.

Shoe Palace, a footwear retail giant, is celebrating its 30th anniversary at the San Jose Flea Market. The company’s founding family members attended the celebration, which included a pop-up Vintage Market, giveaways, and live music. The festivities will continue throughout the weekend, featuring performances by various bands, including a Santana tribute group. In addition, Shoe Palace is offering a shoe collaboration with adidas, featuring designs inspired by the Berryessa Flea Market’s signage.
