Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is set to inspect dredging works in the Delta districts of the state on June 9, ahead of the opening of the Mettur dam on June 12. The inspections come in preparation for the Kuruvai paddy cultivation in the area. The agriculture scientists of Tamil Nadu have recommended opening the dam on June 12, which would benefit Kuruvai cultivators by allowing them to grow crops on an area of 5.30 lakh acres. Meanwhile, Samba farming is expected to take up an area of 8.90 lakh acres. The Mettur dam currently holds 100-feet of water, and is expected to receive 232 TMC during the monsoon. With the India Meteorological Department forecasting normal to above-normal rainfall, there is no expected delay in the dam’s opening. The Chief Minister will leave Chennai on June 8 and will visit Tiruchi and Tiruvarur for inspection on June 9.
