Srinagar is all set to don a new, more modern look in the coming years. By June 2024, the city aims to earn a ‘Smart City’ tag under the Srinagar Smart City Project. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India has sanctioned 137 projects for the city under this project, with the goal of transforming Srinagar’s natural and cultural heritage into a beautiful and quality living experience for all.
The Smart City project has eight themes: Jhelum Water Front Development and Water Transport, Urban Mobility, Street and Intersection Development, City Beautification & Urban Art, Green Srinagar, Heritage Conservation and Downtown Renewal, Information Technology, Central Business District Upgradation, Solid Waste Management. As work on the Smart City project continue, 66 of 137 projects have been completed and 71 are currently being developed.
One of the projects that recently received attention is the Polo View Market, which was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Other Srinagar landmarks like the iconic Lal Chowk and Ghanta Ghar are also undergoing major renovations under the Smart City project.
The goal of the Srinagar Smart City Project is to incorporate Srinagar’s natural and cultural heritage into the city’s infrastructure to provide a more fulfilling living experience. By redeveloping and renovating landmarks and public spaces, the project aims to create a more modern, cohesive look and feel to the entire city.
