Spike in Popularity of Muslim Women’s Sports Leagues in Toronto Offers Inclusive Environment for Athletes

Toronto has witnessed a surge in the popularity of sports leagues specifically catered to Muslim women, providing them with an inclusive environment where they can freely participate while adhering to their faith’s modesty rules. These leagues offer a female-only space where Muslim women can enjoy sporting activities without feeling judged or restricted.

For many Muslim women like Malak Aiad, finding opportunities to engage in sports that align with their faith has always been a challenge. While Aiad had played soccer in youth leagues across the GTA during the summers, it wasn’t until she joined the Muslimah Athletic Association last summer that she truly felt like she belonged. Playing on team Messi-ssauga, Aiad emphasized that as one gets into more competitive leagues, the diversity tends to decrease. She found solace and acceptance in the Muslimah Athletic Association, where the team culture revolved around camaraderie and inclusivity rather than alcohol-centric celebrations.

In the past two years, the Greater Toronto Area has experienced a significant increase in sports leagues catering to Muslim women. These leagues provide a safe space for Muslim women to wear the hijab and shield themselves from judgmental individuals. Although these leagues welcome everyone, the adherence to Islamic guidelines is required, encompassing aspects such as respectful communication among team members, interactions with referees, and the dress code. Zainab Gajani, one of the organizers of the Muslimah Athletic Association, stated that this environment fosters a strong sense of sisterhood and support. She mentioned that within the association, if a player falls down, the entire game halts for the others to help her up—a testament to the bonding and camaraderie these leagues promote.

Muslimah Athletic Association initially started as an idea for like-minded friends who wished to form a community in their new city. But what began as a small-scale initiative quickly grew into a full-time organization, catering to over 400 athletes participating in various sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, boxing, and dragon boat racing. Gajani expressed surprise at the tremendous turnout and the commitment shown by women who had been longing for such opportunities.

The Muslimah Athletic Association provides a unique aspect to their league in the form of modest uniforms. Khadija Atcha, a member of the association playing beach volleyball, emphasized the importance of having a community where women can support each other and play comfortably in their own uniforms. The leagues allow Muslim women to explore their passions beyond their careers, homes, or other roles they may have.

Islamic teachings encourage both men and women to engage in physical activities to maintain good health and fitness. Recently, an increasing number of Muslim women have been participating in various sports, celebrating diversity and breaking barriers. In the UK, the Muslimah Sports Association (MSA) was launched eight years ago to empower young Muslim women through sports, offering over 15 different sports activities per week.

The spike in popularity of Muslim women’s sports leagues in Toronto exemplifies the growing desire for inclusive spaces that accommodate religious and cultural beliefs. By providing a supportive environment where Muslim women can pursue their athletic passions while honoring their faith, these leagues play a pivotal role in breaking barriers and fostering a sense of community.
