Indian low-cost airline SpiceJet has wet-leased two Airbus A340 aircraft to meet the seasonal demand for Hajj travel. The service, which began on 7 June, operates from five cities and will include 200 flights, carrying about 21,000 pilgrims. The A340s will support some of the carrier’s Boeing 737 MAXs, which are also being used for the pilgrimage. Deliveries of ten extra Boeing 737s are due to begin in September, with five of the aircraft expected to be MAXs. Last year, SpiceJet was the only Indian airline operating Hajj flights from India. It plans to continue supporting services overseas through its SpiceXpress freighter arm.
