SYDNEY, Feb. 15 – The state government of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia has mobilized a specialized task force to investigate the presence of asbestos in mulch across multiple sites in Sydney. Led by Carolyn Walsh, the current Chair of the NSW Asbestos Coordination Committee, the task force comprises senior representatives from state government agencies and local government. The announcement follows the recent discovery of asbestos in various public spaces in Sydney. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to serious health conditions such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. The NSW government’s top priority is to trace the supply chain of the tainted mulch to notify potential recipients and ensure the immediate implementation of safety measures. As part of the ongoing investigation, the NSW Environment Protection Authority has tested 200 sites in Sydney, with 20 returning positive results for the cancer-causing substance.
