Spanish Soccer Federation President Luis Rubiales Resigns Following Controversial Kiss, Clearing Path for Men’s World Cup Bid

After weeks of intense pressure, Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish Soccer Federation, has finally resigned from his position. His decision comes in the wake of a controversial incident involving a non-consensual kiss on the lips of player Jenni Hermoso during the trophy ceremony at the Women’s World Cup final. Rubiales’ resignation is seen as a necessary step for Spanish soccer to move forward and repair its tarnished reputation. Furthermore, it paves the way for Spain to regain momentum in its bid to co-host the men’s World Cup in 2030, alongside Portugal, Morocco, and potentially Ukraine.

Rubiales’ resignation was met with relief and satisfaction by many in Spain. Irene Montero, the acting minister of equality, expressed her support on social media, stating, It’s over. The Spanish soccer federation had previously called for Rubiales’ resignation, and even women’s team coach Jorge Vilda was terminated last week for his support of Rubiales.

Rubiales’ defiant stance, labeling the situation a witch hunt orchestrated by false feminists, did little to alleviate the growing discontent. In fact, it only exacerbated the problem. Yolanda Diaz, Spain’s acting Deputy Prime Minister, applauded Rubiales’ decision to step down, emphasizing the country’s commitment to progress and women’s rights. She wrote, The feminist country is advancing faster and faster… We are with you, Jenni, and with all women.

Pedro Rocha has assumed temporary leadership of the federation since Rubiales’ suspension by FIFA. The Spanish soccer federation announced that they would initiate proceedings to hold a new presidential election. Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish soccer league, acknowledged the significant damage caused to the reputation of Spanish soccer. He stressed the need to work towards recovery, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.

Rubiales also revealed his resignation from the position of vice president of UEFA, citing concerns about potential damage to Spain’s joint bid to host the men’s World Cup. In his resignation statement, he stated, I don’t want Spanish soccer to be hurt by this exaggerated campaign against me… I take this decision after being assured that my exit would help contribute to the stability that will allow both Europe and Africa to stay united for their dream of 2030.

Despite his resignation, Rubiales still faces the possibility of criminal charges as Spanish state prosecutors have opened an investigation. Victoria Rosell, a government official dealing with gender violence, expressed her desire for Rubiales to face legal consequences for his actions.

The resignation of Rubiales comes at a critical juncture for Spanish soccer. As the Women’s Nations League approaches, Spain is set to face top-ranked Sweden, having recently climbed to second place in the FIFA rankings. However, the domestic women’s league remains in turmoil, with players on strike demanding a dignified minimum wage.

The departure of Rubiales marks a significant turning point for Spanish soccer, allowing the sport to heal and move forward. The focus now shifts to rebuilding the reputation of the federation and the country’s bid to host the 2030 men’s World Cup. With fresh leadership and renewed dedication to gender equality, Spanish soccer aims to overcome this dark chapter and regain its standing on the global stage.
