Spanish Football President Faces Disciplinary Action for Non-Consensual Kiss Incident

The president of the Spanish Football Association, Luis Rubiales, is facing disciplinary action for an incident involving a non-consensual kiss. The FIFA disciplinary committee has announced that it is launching proceedings against Rubiales based on the events that occurred during the final. According to FIFA, this incident may constitute violations of the FIFA disciplinary code.

In response to the incident, Spain star Hermoso and union Futpro issued a joint statement calling for action to be taken against Rubiales. They emphasized the need for exemplary measures to protect women footballers from such unacceptable actions. Amnesty International also expressed support for Hermoso’s demands, stating that non-consensual kissing is a form of sexual violence that cannot be justified.

The backlash against Rubiales has been widespread. Liga F, Spain’s women’s football league, has called for his dismissal. The Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, stated that Rubiales’ apology was not enough. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti criticized Rubiales, describing his behavior as inappropriate for a federation president.

Rubiales, initially defensive, eventually apologized for his actions. However, the criticism continues, and the Spanish Football Association has launched an investigation into his conduct. An emergency meeting is scheduled to address the issue.

Getafe president Angel Torres joined the chorus of voices against Rubiales, asserting that he should no longer hold his position. American forward Megan Rapinoe, one of the world’s highest-profile women’s players, voiced her condemnation, highlighting the misogynistic and sexist nature of Rubiales’ behavior during the final.

In light of the controversy, it is crucial to ensure justice is served and that measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The disciplinary action against Rubiales demonstrates a commitment to standing against sexual violence and protecting the well-being of women footballers. It remains to be seen what consequences Rubiales will face, but a comprehensive response is necessary to address this issue effectively.
