The Spanish Federation President, Luis Rubiales, is facing accusations of sexual aggression and is now under investigation. The allegations stem from an incident where Rubiales grabbed and kissed a woman named Hermoso on the lips. Prosecutors have initiated a preliminary investigation into the matter, but it will only proceed if Hermoso files a formal complaint.

Gender issues have been a prominent topic in Spain, with thousands of women participating in street marches to protest against sexual abuse and violence. The left-wing coalition government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has introduced several legal reforms related to equal pay and abortion rights.

The case against Rubiales comes at a time when Spain is under a caretaker government after an inconclusive election. The election saw heated debates over women’s rights, with critics questioning a sexual violence law that inadvertently allowed over 1,000 imprisoned offenders to have their sentences reduced or ended early due to a legal loophole.

The hard-right Vox party has labeled the Rubiales case as a political witchhunt, aimed at diverting attention from the government’s mistakes regarding the sexual violence law. Although Vox has called for Rubiales to resign, claiming his behavior is incompatible with his position as federation president, it too has faced criticism for its stance on women’s rights.

While the government has been accused of being slow to respond to the Rubiales crisis, it has been urged to proceed cautiously and allow society time to adapt to changes in women’s rights. Government spokesperson, Montero, states that she is pleased to see calls for even faster and more forceful changes to be made. Balancing different perspectives, she believes the changes must go deeper to address the issue adequately.

In conclusion, the Spanish Federation President is facing accusations of sexual aggression and is currently under investigation. This case highlights the ongoing debate around women’s rights in Spain, with various political parties expressing contrasting views. The government has been criticized for its handling of the sexual violence law, while also being encouraged to accelerate changes to address the issue effectively.
