Spanish FA President Faces Legal Proceedings Following Refusal to Resign

Spanish Football Association (FA) President Luis Rubiales is facing legal action from the government in Spain after his controversial decision to remain in his position despite widespread criticism. Rubiales had been expected to step down following an incident in which he kissed World Cup star Jenni Hermoso on the lips during a visit to Australia. However, during a press conference, Rubiales stunned many by announcing that he would not be resigning.

The backlash to Rubiales’ decision has been significant, with Real Betis forward Borja Iglesias even opting to step back from international duty until a resolution is reached. Now, Victor Francos, the head of the state-run National Sports Council, has confirmed that legal action will be taken to remove Rubiales from office.

During a press conference, Francos stated, The government has initiated proceedings so that Mr. Rubiales can provide an explanation to the Sport Court. If the Sport Court agrees, we will suspend Mr. Rubiales from his duties.

Popular Spanish club Real Madrid has also voiced its disapproval of Rubiales’ actions. In an official statement, the club declared its support for the decision made by the president of the Superior Council of Sports, Víctor Francos, to refer the case to the Administrative Court of Sport. Real Madrid stated that it has complete trust in the actions of the relevant authorities, such as the Higher Sports Council.

Valencia CF, another prominent club in La Liga, has also condemned Rubiales’ behavior. In a statement, the club expressed regret at the lack of self-criticism, humility, and humanity in Rubiales’ explanations during the Extraordinary Assembly of the RFEF. Valencia CF reiterated its support for Jenni Hermoso and the entire women’s soccer team, while lamenting that the incident has diverted attention from the historic achievement of winning the Women’s Soccer World Cup.

In conclusion, Spanish FA President Luis Rubiales finds himself facing legal proceedings and widespread criticism after his refusal to resign. As the situation unfolds, the government in Spain has taken steps to remove Rubiales from office, while top football clubs such as Real Madrid and Valencia CF have publicly voiced their disapproval. The controversy surrounding Rubiales’ actions has overshadowed the recent success of the Spanish women’s soccer team, adding further complexity to the situation.
