The Samajwadi Party (SP) has changed their previous stance of aloofness towards wrestlers’ protests over allegations of sexual harassment by Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The party has now vocalized support for the wrestlers without mentioning the WFI chief’s name. On Tuesday, Akhilesh Yadav tweeted his support for women wrestlers as they headed to Haridwar to immerse their medals in the Ganga, using the hashtag Mother Ganga. Other SP leaders, including Swami Prasad Maurya and Shivpal Yadav, have also expressed support for the protesters. Although their ally, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), has been vocal in their support of the protesters, the SP had not been previously due to Singh’s previous association with the party and admission of his proximity to the SP and Yadav family. Singh, who was previously with the SP, is now BJP’s Kaiserganj MP in his sixth term as MP.
