Southwest Airlines, Pilots Union Reach Labor Deal
WASHINGTON – Southwest Airlines Co. and the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) have reached an agreement in principle on a new contract worth $12 billion over five years, according to SWAPA. After years of negotiation, this deal is a significant development for both parties.
The next step in the process involves the contract being evaluated by SWAPA’s 25-member board of directors. If approved, the agreement in principle will become a tentative agreement and will be put to a vote by the 11,000-plus members of the pilot union.
SWAPA President Captain Casey Murray expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating, This AIP comes after three-and-a-half long years of negotiating. We are finally at a place where we think the value of our pilots and their productivity is being realized. Our pilots and Southwest Airlines customers deserve security and confidence in our future, and we believe that this contract achieves that.
Southwest Airlines’ previous contract expired in 2020, and since then, pilots have been advocating for better pay and improved work rules. With this new agreement, Southwest Airlines joins other major airlines, such as United Airlines and American Airlines, in reaching deals with their respective pilot unions.
In addition to the labor deal, Southwest Airlines has been in the news recently for other reasons. The U.S. Department of Transportation fined the airline $140 million for violating consumer protection rules, following the disruption caused by Winter Storm Elliott in December 2022.
Southwest Airlines has expressed its commitment to resolving the issues arising from the storm by paying over $600 million in ticket refunds, expense reimbursements, and goodwill gestures.
This contract agreement represents a significant milestone for both Southwest Airlines and its pilots. It brings an end to years of negotiations and ensures that pilots’ compensation and working conditions are more aligned with their contributions to the company’s success.
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association’s board of directors will convene on Wednesday to determine whether to proceed with a membership vote, marking the final step in solidifying this labor deal. Southwest Airlines and its pilots are poised to embark on a new chapter of greater stability and collaboration, benefiting both the pilots and the airline’s passengers.
Overall, this agreement underscores the important role that pilots play in the success of Southwest Airlines and highlights the significance of reaching a fair and mutually beneficial labor agreement.
