Drive-thru health clinics find market in post-pandemic healthcare

ROSWELL, Ga. – It’s peak flu season, and the southern U.S. is feeling the effects. To combat the surge in illnesses, a new healthcare model is gaining popularity: drive-thru clinics. SmartMED Drive-Thru Medical Care in Roswell has seen a significant increase in patient volume and believes that this convenience-driven approach to healthcare is here to stay.

Our volume is up three times year over year, said Dr. Luke Lathrop, co-owner of SmartMED. People are looking for quick, efficient care without the hassle of waiting rooms.

Amy Leachman, a mother of three, is a frequent visitor at SmartMED. She emphasized the convenience and time-saving aspect of drive-thru clinics. I don’t have to get my kids out of the car. There’s no worry about germs in a waiting room, and I’m in and out in less than five minutes, Leachman said.

Stacy Lathrop, co-owner of SmartMED, explained that the speed of care at their drive-thru clinic is an attractive feature for many patients. The time spent with us is literally under seven minutes, Stacy said. And the level of care is comparable to what you would receive at a walk-in clinic.

While drive-thru healthcare models have gained traction, Stacy believes they should work alongside traditional healthcare providers rather than replacing them. There’s room to grow all over the country, she said.

By adopting the drive-thru approach, patients can avoid crowded waiting rooms and reduce their potential exposure to contagious illnesses. Urgent care centers often have long wait times, making drive-thru clinics a more efficient alternative.

Healthcare experts agree that this model aligns with the growing demand for convenient and accessible care in a post-pandemic world. The drive-thru setup allows healthcare providers to quickly assess patients, provide necessary treatments or prescriptions, and manage non-emergency medical situations efficiently.

While drive-thru clinics may not fully replace traditional offices or urgent cares, they serve an essential role in meeting the evolving needs of patients, said Dr. Lathrop. Especially during flu season, when we are seeing a surge in illnesses, this model ensures that patients can receive prompt care without unnecessary exposure.

In conclusion, drive-thru health clinics have emerged as a popular and efficient alternative for patients seeking medical care during peak flu season. With shorter wait times, reduced exposure to germs, and a focus on convenience, these clinics are likely to play a significant role in the future of healthcare. As the demand for accessible and timely care continues to grow, drive-thru clinics like SmartMED are positioned to meet the evolving needs of patients across the country.
