South Sudan Army Recovers Stolen Items from Pastor’s Residence, Soldiers Arrested
The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) has announced that stolen items from the residence of a pastor in Yei have been recovered and returned to him. Major General Lul Ruai Koang, the spokesperson for the SSPDF, confirmed that these thefts were carried out by soldiers who were part of a squad operating in Yei but had become separated from the main group.
According to Maj Gen Lul Ruai Koang, the soldiers had sought refuge at Pastor Hillary Mawa’s residence for the night when they took advantage of the situation and made off with four mattresses and two solar panels, among other items. However, upon reaching their final destination, they released three youths who had assisted them in carrying an 82-millimeter motor.
In response to this incident, at least two Non-Commissioned Officers have been arrested by the SSPDF. The number of arrests differs from the statement made by the Yei River County Commissioner, who claimed that twelve suspects had been apprehended. Nevertheless, Maj Gen Lul Ruai Koang assures that there was no violence against the pastor or any Christians, contrary to claims made by the bishops.
On August 26, the Episcopal Church Bishops in South Sudan condemned the looting and torture of Christians by SSPDF soldiers in Yei River County. The bishops alleged that mobile SSPDF forces had attacked, looted, and tortured Christian believers in Nyori and Mongo Archdeaconries of Yei Diocese on August 24.
In light of these events, the recovery of the stolen items and the arrest of the soldiers involved serve as a positive step towards addressing the misconduct within the SSPDF. The spokesperson’s assurance that no violence was perpetrated against the pastor and Christians provides some reassurance amid the allegations made by the bishops.
The incident highlights the need for accountability and discipline within the armed forces, as well as the importance of upholding human rights. The South Sudanese government should take appropriate measures to address this issue, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
It is crucial for the SSPDF to maintain its credibility and reputation as a responsible and professional security force. Efforts must be made to prevent such incidents in the future, safeguarding the rights and well-being of all South Sudanese citizens.
