South Dakota lawmaker and nurse anesthetist Dr. Taylor Rehfeldt has introduced a bill aimed at clarifying the state’s abortion laws and combatting misinformation surrounding them. The bill, called the Med Ed Bill, would allocate funds to the state Department of Health to create training materials that provide guidance on the state’s near-total abortion ban when the mother’s life is at risk during pregnancy. Rehfeldt argued that the bill is necessary to protect the health of women and babies and to provide clarity for healthcare providers who may face criminal penalties if they perform an abortion that doesn’t meet the legal standard. Supporters of the bill hope it will gain bipartisan support and provide necessary clarity in the face of confusion caused by the abortion industry. South Dakota’s ban on abortion went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, granting states the authority to regulate abortion rights.
