South Dakota Attorney General Targets TikTok Amidst Lawsuits against Meta

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is not only involved in a lawsuit against Facebook’s parent company, Meta, but he has also set his sights on another social media giant – TikTok. Jackley, as chairman of the National Attorney General Alliance, believes that together with 40 attorneys general, they can make a difference in curbing the conduct of social media companies.

Jackley’s concerns stem from the need for better protection of children’s privacy and the prevention of data collection. He asserts that social media companies like TikTok need to be held accountable for their behavior, especially when it comes to exploiting young users. The current Meta lawsuit alleges that the company engaged in a deceptive scheme to profit off its young users by misleading them about safety features and harmful content.

The Attorney General community aims to put an end to this kind of conduct. Efforts are being made to collaborate and communicate, not only within the National Attorney General Alliance but also with external entities. Lawsuits initiated by groups of attorneys general can bring in funds from companies like big tobacco and pharmaceutical corporations. The resulting financial resources can be directed towards education and prevention efforts, such as those conducted by the Department of Social Services and the Department of Health.

While the lawsuit against Meta is ongoing, Jackley believes that TikTok should also face scrutiny for its practices. He emphasizes the importance of protecting children and preventing the invasion of their privacy. According to Jackley, social media companies like TikTok need to do a better job in these areas. He expects that in the coming weeks, there will be further movement by the Attorney General community to address the issues surrounding TikTok’s conduct.

In an increasingly interconnected world, social media platforms play a significant role in the lives of young users. As a result, it is crucial to hold these platforms accountable for their actions and ensure the safety and privacy of children. The Attorney General community, with Marty Jackley at its helm, is determined to make a difference and put a stop to the exploitation of young users by social media companies like TikTok.

The ongoing lawsuits against Meta and the anticipated actions against TikTok highlight the commitment of the Attorney General community to safeguard the well-being of children and prevent deceptive practices in the social media sphere. As discussions and legal battles progress, the hope is that these efforts will lead to positive change and improved protection for young users.
