SOMA Tent at Outside Lands Festival Unexpectedly Closes for Second Consecutive Day
The SOMA Tent, a popular dance music space at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco, has unexpectedly closed down for the second consecutive day on Saturday (Aug. 12).
The closure announcement was made on the festival’s X (formerly Twitter) page, stating, SOMA Tent is closed until further notice. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this issue and will provide updates when available.
Although the social media post did not provide a reason for the closure, it appears to be related to concerns regarding the flooring. A festival spokesperson, in a statement to the Chronicle, explained, After diligently monitoring the flooring throughout Saturday, we decided to close the SOMA Tent for the remainder of the afternoon out of an abundance of caution.
This is the second time the SOMA Tent has been closed during the festival. It was initially shut down on the first day, Friday, August 11, and then reopened briefly on Day 2 before being closed again.
Dance music fans attending the festival were understandably disappointed by the news and voiced their frustration on social media platforms. Nick Woods (@woodsnick) expressed his disappointment, saying, Can’t believe SOMA stage failed this year. The only reason I bought a 3-day pass. Kicked out two days in a row before the halfway point, and day 2 kicked out early folks before the next DJ with a 1+ hour wait outside to get back inside, ensuring they missed it!
Concerns were also raised about the closure impacting attendance on Day 3 (August 13) of the festival. Brandon Bihl (@BihlBrandon) questioned whether the issue would be resolved in time, asking, Will this issue be resolved by tomorrow (Sunday) or should we sell our tickets? We are coming for SOMA.
As of Sunday morning, the festival’s website still listed a full lineup of acts scheduled to perform at the SOMA Tent, hinting that it may be open for the final day of the festival. However, no official confirmation has been issued yet.
