Nagpur: Enumerators conducting a survey to assess the socio-economic status of the Maratha community are facing backlash from local residents. The enumerators have been enrolling each member individually, contrary to instructions, which has raised concerns about the reliability of the data. Sources reveal that the lack of precise target data and support at the hyperlocal level has contributed to this problem.
According to a supervisor, the confusion surrounding the inclusion of each family member led to the need for redoing the surveys. If there had been a dry run, we could have minimized the errors, the supervisor explained. Another suggested that including corporators in the survey teams could have made the process easier and more trustworthy.
Additionally, numerous enumerators have reported encountering hostile situations during their visits. Residents in some areas have sent them away, claiming that no Maratha family lives here. The enumerators have found it challenging to gain cooperation, particularly from those residing in affluent neighborhoods. Our teams are not treated with respect. Some individuals have stated their disinterest in answering questions due to belonging to the open category. Women enumerators are hesitant to enter housing societies alone, expressed a supervisor.
The lack of coordination among the surveyors has also added to the difficulties they face. One supervisor highlighted the annoyance experienced by enumerators when they arrived at a home only to find that another team had already covered it. Proper demarcation of areas and prior knowledge of the number of houses could have averted this problem and optimized resource utilization.
As the survey continues, authorities must address these issues to ensure accurate and reliable data collection. Clear guidelines must be provided to enumerators, and training sessions or dry runs should be conducted to minimize errors. Cooperation and respect from residents are vital for the success of such surveys, and efforts should be made to cultivate positive relationships.
