SNP Steps in to Assist Detained Immigrant in Former MP’s Constituency
The Scottish National Party (SNP) has taken up the case of Muhammad Rauf Waris, an immigrant who was arrested and detained by immigration workers. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Waris resides in the constituency of former MP Margaret Ferrier, who was removed following a recall petition. SNP MP Alyn Smith has now taken on Waris’s case, as he is currently the representative for the constituency. However, it is possible that Katy Loudon could eventually become Waris’s representative if she wins the upcoming by-election.
Waris was accused of breaching the conditions of his visa by working more than the legally permitted 20 hours per week. In response to his detention, MP Alyn Smith wrote to the Home Office expressing his concerns about the situation. Despite their attempts to seek comment from the Home Office, The National did not receive a response.
This turn of events has prompted Katy Loudon to call on Michael Shanks, Labour’s candidate in the by-election, to speak up for Waris. Loudon criticized the treatment of Waris, emphasizing the detrimental effects of detaining someone for weeks on end while forcing them to live in uncertainty, especially when they have a valid visa and evidence to support compliance with visa conditions. She labeled the situation as another example of the inhumane and hostile immigration system in place in Westminster, which she argues harms people and damages Scotland’s economy.
Loudon also condemned the pro-Brexit Labour party for endorsing such policies, highlighting the need for Scotland to send a message to Westminster by voting for the SNP and rejecting these barbaric practices.
The National has approached Scottish Labour for a comment on the matter.
