Christmas Day is less than 10 days away, and forecasters are predicting whether there will be snow for the holiday.

As Christmas draws near, meteorologists are predicting a green Christmas for many areas due to warmer-than-average temperatures and drier conditions. This may reduce the odds of a white Christmas for much of the country.

The best chances for a white Christmas are in the higher elevations of the West and near the Canadian border from North Dakota to Maine, as well as in the mountains of West Virginia.

The National Weather Service defines a white Christmas as having 1 inch of snow on the ground on the morning of Dec. 25. This year, only 18% of the contiguous U.S. is snow-covered as of Dec. 15.

According to AccuWeather and Weather.com, recent weather patterns indicate that the chances of snow on Christmas Day are slim for most areas. Warmer temperatures and drier conditions have prevailed, leading to forecasts of a green Christmas in numerous locations across the country.

Meteorologists highlight that the best prospects for a white Christmas can be found in the higher elevations of the Western states, as well as near the Canadian border stretching from North Dakota to Maine. Additionally, the mountainous regions of West Virginia could experience snowfall during the holiday.

A white Christmas is defined by the National Weather Service as having at least 1 inch of snow on the ground on the morning of December 25th. However, as of December 15th, only a mere 18% of the contiguous United States was covered in snow.

While dreams of a picture-perfect white Christmas may be dashed for many, it is important to note that these predictions are weather-based and subject to change. Meteorologists and forecasters are closely monitoring weather patterns leading up to the holiday.

Snowfall aside, many individuals may still find joy in the company of loved ones, the spirit of giving, and the festive atmosphere that accompanies the holiday season. Regardless of the weather conditions, Christmas remains a special time for celebration and reflection.

As we eagerly count down the days to Christmas, let us remember that the true magic of the holiday lies not in the weather but in the hearts of those who gather together to share love and joy.
