SMU Dominates Louisiana Tech with Explosive Plays in 38-14 Victory

Dallas, TX – In a thrilling Saturday night matchup, the SMU Mustangs displayed their dominance over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs with a commanding 38-14 victory. SMU utilized a series of explosive plays in the first half to secure the win at Gerald L. Ford Stadium.

The Bulldogs, coming off a strong start to the season, were unable to find their rhythm in the first half as they were shutout for the first time since 2020. Meanwhile, SMU wasted no time putting points on the board, amassing 31 points in the first 30 minutes of play.

In a game that initially seemed poised for a close contest, it was SMU who struck first. After Louisiana Tech’s attempted field goal went wide right, SMU’s Preston Stone connected with Jordan Hudson for an impressive 67-yard touchdown. This electrifying play set the tone for the Mustangs’ explosive offense.

But SMU wasn’t done yet. Just two plays later, their defense joined in on the scoring frenzy as Kori Roberson intercepted a short pass and returned it for a 16-yard touchdown. The Bulldog defense managed to halt SMU’s progress on subsequent possessions, limiting them to a field goal and forcing a punt. However, an unfortunate illegal substitution penalty against Louisiana Tech gifted SMU a first down, allowing them to extend their lead with another touchdown.

As halftime approached, SMU continued to run away with the game. With only 30 seconds left on the clock, the Mustangs launched a 67-yard rushing play, followed shortly by a 25-yard touchdown completion. This left Louisiana Tech trailing 31-0 heading into the break.

The Bulldogs showed some signs of life in the second half, quickly marching 75 yards down the field to earn their first score of the game. Quarterback Bachmeier delivered four consecutive completions, including a crucial 53-yard connection on third down. Despite this resurgence, both teams managed to limit their scoring opportunities in the third quarter.

In the final stages of the game, SMU added one more touchdown to their tally, while Louisiana Tech found the end zone with just 26 seconds remaining. However, it was too little too late for the Bulldogs as the final score read 38-14 in favor of SMU.

Following the game, Louisiana Tech head coach expressed his disappointment with the team’s overall performance. Despite a commendable defensive effort, the offense struggled to find a rhythm, leading to pressure in the passing game.

Looking ahead, Louisiana Tech will return to their home turf at Joe Aillet Stadium on September 9th to face off against Northwestern State. The Bulldogs will aim to bounce back from this loss and regain their winning momentum.

Overall, SMU’s explosive plays and dominant first-half performance paved the way for their convincing victory over Louisiana Tech. This win sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting season for the Mustangs, who will look to build on their early success. As for the Bulldogs, they will need to regroup and make the necessary improvements to bounce back from this defeat.
