Management at Sligo University Hospital has confirmed that the facility is currently under significant pressure as a result of COVID outbreaks and a high influx of patients to the Emergency Department. The hospital has issued a statement urging members of the public to exercise extra caution when visiting and to stay away if feeling unwell.

According to Hospital management, there are currently five COVID outbreaks being managed at the facility. This has further strained resources and necessitated additional measures to ensure the safety of patients and staff. The public has been asked to be vigilant and consider alternative options for non-emergency care, such as visiting ‘Out of Hours GP’ services or pharmacies before heading to the Emergency Department.

The Emergency Department has experienced a substantial increase in attendance over the past few days, resulting in prolonged waiting times for patients before they can receive medical attention. The hospital has emphasized that Emergency Departments should primarily be accessed by individuals with serious injuries or life-threatening emergencies. Patients will be seen in order of medical priority, and the hospital remains committed to treating everyone who presents in the ED.

To alleviate the pressure on the hospital, all available beds are currently in use, and efforts are being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home. This will create space for patients in need of admission. Additionally, residents in the North West region are reminded that the Roscommon Injury Unit is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm, including Christmas Day, and can provide treatment for breaks, sprains, minor wounds, and burns for patients over 5 years old.

Grainne Mc Cann, the Hospital Manager at Sligo University Hospital, has also expressed concern about the risk of visitors introducing infectious illnesses into the hospital and potentially endangering vulnerable patients. In light of this, visitors are urged to adhere to all precautionary measures and follow strict hygiene protocols.

With Sligo University Hospital facing these challenges, it is crucial for the public to remain informed and considerate. By utilizing alternative healthcare options for non-emergency cases, individuals can help alleviate the strain on the hospital and ensure that resources are available for those in immediate need.
