Slab Collapse Tragically Claims Two Lives in Navi Mumbai Building
In a devastating incident, a slab collapse in a building located in Navi Mumbai’s ‘B’ wing resulted in the loss of two lives. The tragic incident occurred on the second and first floors, where the collapsing slab fatally injured a laborer and another individual. Authorities have identified one of the victims as Babaji Shingade.
According to officials, the collapse took place while civil work was being carried out on the third floor. The affected building comprises four wings, and immediate rescue efforts were launched by the fire brigade and disaster management teams. Despite their prompt response, the unfortunate incident claimed two lives.
Fortunately, the building’s ground floor, which houses a tailoring shop, was temporarily closed moments before the accident, averting a potential disaster. The shopkeeper had left the premises only minutes before the slab gave way. However, several others sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
In response to the incident, the authorities promptly evacuated the building, relocating the residents to the Ahilyabai Holkar Samaj Mandir hall in Nerul. Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, along with other senior officials, arrived at the scene to supervise the rescue and relief operations.
Despite the gravity of the situation, initial inquiries by civic officials have confirmed that the building was legally constructed and possessed all the necessary permits. The area where the tragedy unfolded had ongoing construction work, which might have contributed to the fateful collapse, as per a fire official.
Local law enforcement has registered a case of accidental death, and the bodies of the deceased have been transferred to a government hospital for postmortem examinations. In the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident, authorities and experts will conduct thorough investigations to determine the exact cause and prevent similar accidents in the future.
