Skittles Faces Criticism for Black Trans Lives Matter Packaging in Partnership with GLAAD
Skittles, in collaboration with GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), recently altered its packaging in an effort to show support for the LGBTQ+ community. The limited edition Pride Packs feature alternative designs, one of which includes the phrase Black Trans Lives Matter. Although the intention was to promote inclusivity and equality, the move has sparked backlash on social media.
Critics argue that by highlighting Black Trans Lives Matter, Skittles is diverting attention away from the broader message of supporting the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. They believe that focusing on one aspect detracts from the goal of inclusivity. However, Skittles’ aim was to bring attention to the unique challenges and discrimination faced by Black trans individuals within the larger LGBTQ+ community.
This partnership between Skittles and GLAAD is not new. It marks the company’s fourth consecutive year teaming up with the LGBTQ+ advocacy organization to release Pride packs. In previous years, the packaging was gray as a symbol of support. This year, Skittles decided to adopt a more colorful approach by featuring designs created by six LGBTQ+ artists who see the rainbow in their daily lives. Additionally, each pack will have a QR code leading consumers to a virtual studio with information about the artists and their work.
Critics of the decision to include Black Trans Lives Matter on the packaging argue that it undermines the overall message of support for the LGBTQ+ community. However, it is important to recognize that this move amplifies the voices and experiences of Black trans individuals, taking a firm stance against discrimination and striving for a more inclusive society.
In addition to changing their packaging, Skittles is donating one dollar to GLAAD for every Pride pack purchased, further supporting the organization’s vital work in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. This initiative not only raises awareness but also provides tangible support for the community.
While there may be criticism surrounding Skittles’ decision, it is crucial to acknowledge their effort to highlight the specific challenges faced by Black trans individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. By amplifying their voices, Skittles demonstrates a commitment to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity in society.
