Sikh Separatist Shot Dead in Canada, Fueling Diplomatic Tensions
Another Sikh separatist has been killed in Canada, adding fuel to the already heated diplomatic tensions between Canada and India. The incident follows the recent killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which intensified the dispute between the two nations.
According to reports from Indian media, both shootings are believed to be connected to gang rivalries. The Hindustan Times reported that intelligence inputs from Canada indicate that Sukhdool Singh, also known as Sukha Duneke from the Davinder Bambiha gang in Moga district, was killed in an inter-gang rivalry on Wednesday night. Although unconfirmed, it is believed that he was killed in Winnipeg, Canada. This mirrors the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who lost his life in a similar inter-gang warfare in Surrey on June 19, as rivals fired around 15 bullets at him.
Duneke had relocated to Canada from India in 2017 and was wanted in India with seven criminal cases registered against him. The Indian agency NIA had just issued warrants for his arrest prior to his death.
Following the reports of Nijjar’s murder, Canada had expelled a senior Indian diplomat, alleging credible information linking Indian government agents to the killing. In response, India expelled a Canadian diplomat, escalating tensions between the two countries.
This latest incident has further strained the diplomatic relations between Canada and India. The ongoing dispute has caused international concern, as both nations try to maintain a balance in their approach to the issue.
It is important to note that these incidents are believed to be gang-related rather than acts of terrorism or politically motivated violence. However, their occurrence within the Sikh community has stirred sensitivity and amplified the existing tensions.
While investigations continue into these killings, it is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and cooperate in order to prevent further escalation of the situation.
