Significant Snowfall Forecasted as Winds Batter North West England, UK

Predictions from the Met Office suggest that the UK could experience significant snowfall in the coming week as temperatures drop. While the Christmas period has been relatively mild with occasional drizzles, the weather is expected to turn cooler as we approach 2024. A yellow weather warning has been issued for the north west of England, with strong winds expected to cause disruption.

The south-westerly winds are anticipated to bring gusts of 50 to 60mph, which may increase to around 75mph near exposed coasts and high ground. These winds are predicted to occur later today and overnight, accompanied by heavy and squally showers.

The Met Office has warned that there is a small chance of injuries from flying debris, as well as the possibility of some damage to buildings, such as tiles being blown from roofs.

Tomorrow, temperatures are expected to feel cooler compared to previous days, with lows of 9°C that may feel more like 4°C. Unsettled conditions are likely to persist, with frequent heavy showers that may merge to give longer periods of rain and potential hail. The windy conditions are expected to continue, particularly along the coast and over hills.

The outlook from the Met Office for Friday to Sunday suggests that there will be brighter spells and a few showers on Friday, with winds easing. However, Saturday is predicted to turn cloudier and breezier, with rain arriving later and showers and sunny spells on Sunday.

The warmest temperatures we can expect for the remainder of the week are around 10°C, with a real feel of 6°C. Starting from Monday, January 1, a long-range forecast for the UK indicates slightly below average temperatures across the north, which may lead to wintry showers. If colder air moves southwards, there is a possibility of more significant snowfall along the boundary between mild and cold air.

Looking further ahead, the Met Office expects more settled conditions to gradually develop across a wider area, increasing the risk of frost and fog. The forecast suggests that if this occurs, day by day cooling could result in below average temperatures and an increased threat of winter hazards, including ice and snow.

It is important to note that the Met Office’s long-range forecast provides an indication of how the weather might deviate from normal patterns across the entire UK.
