Should the Pittsburgh Steelers Reconsider Rehiring Defensive Lineman Chris Wormley?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for adding additional players to their roster after mandatory minicamp, and one name that could make sense for a return is former Steelers defensive lineman Chris Wormley. Wormley played three seasons in Pittsburgh before suffering an ACL injury in Week 14 of the 2022 season.

Currently an unrestricted free agent, Wormley underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL in December 2022. While he is almost seven months into his recovery, it is uncertain when he will be fully ready to return to the football field. This could make him a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, allowing him to gradually work his way back into playing shape.

Despite adding depth to their defensive line this offseason, bringing back Wormley could be beneficial for the Steelers. As a veteran who already knows the team’s system and has good chemistry with the players, Wormley could provide valuable depth behind starters Cameron Heyward and Larry Ogunjobi. The team has added other defensive linemen through free agency and the draft, but the true 3-4 defensive end position still lacks depth.

While players like Armon Watts, Breiden Fehoko, and potentially Keeanu Benton could see playing time at that position, it remains uncertain if they can fill the role effectively. With Isaiahh Loudermilk not guaranteed a roster spot, signing Wormley to a veteran minimum deal and placing him on the PUP list until he is fully cleared for action could be a sensible move for the Steelers.

Although Wormley’s injury may work against his chances of returning to Pittsburgh, the team has shown a willingness to bring back familiar faces in the past. If Wormley proves his fitness and is available to play, his experience and locker room presence could make him an attractive addition to the team’s defensive line.

In conclusion, while Chris Wormley’s ACL injury has raised doubts about his future in the NFL, his previous stint with the Steelers and his potential return could provide depth and stability to their defensive line. Only time will tell if the Steelers ultimately decide to bring Wormley back, but his familiarity with the team and his skills on the field make him a strong candidate for a return.
