A shoplifting suspect caused a multi-vehicle crash on I-75 South near East Brainerd Road, resulting in a shutdown of the interstate for three hours. The incident occurred when a Chattanooga Police Department (CPD) officer attempted to stop a black Nissan Armada suspected of involvement in a store theft.
As the officer initiated the traffic stop around 6:30 pm, the 28-year-old woman driving the Nissan attempted to flee. In her attempt to escape, she rapidly changed lanes, resulting in a collision with five other vehicles. This caused significant disruption and injuries to those involved.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene and transported the woman and a passenger in her vehicle, both with non-life-threatening injuries, to the hospital. Additionally, a passenger from another vehicle also suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for further medical attention. Three vehicles, including the Nissan Armada, were towed away, while the remaining vehicles involved were able to be driven away from the accident site.
The CPD’s investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending against the shoplifting suspect. Traffic investigators have now reopened all lanes on I-75 South at East Brainerd Road after several hours of closure.
