Shoplifter Fires Gun in Kansas Mall, Overland Park Police Seek Video Evidence
Overland Park police are seeking video evidence from witnesses after a shoplifter fired a gun at Oak Park Mall in Kansas. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when two men attempted to steal merchandise from a store inside the mall. As they tried to make their escape through the food court, three undercover detectives intervened. One of the suspects managed to obtain a detective’s firearm and pulled the trigger, but luckily no one was injured. The shooter was quickly apprehended, while the other man fled before being captured by officers.
In light of the upcoming holiday season and the expected increase in foot traffic at the mall, Overland Park police are taking steps to ensure shoppers feel safe. Officer John Lacy revealed that there will be plainclothes detectives and uniformed police officers patrolling the mall, with a potential presence of up to 5-6 detectives on Black Friday. Additionally, the mall already has security measures in place, including cameras and the availability of on-site police personnel.
Lacy emphasized the importance of vigilance among shoppers and encouraged them to report any suspicious activity to store managers or the police. He urged people to be aware of their surroundings and stay alert during their shopping trips.
Both suspects involved in the shoplifting incident have been taken into custody, but the investigation is ongoing.
